Four to six months before the wedding, choose the cake’s overall look and flavor, and reserve the services of a professional baker. You can order a wedding cake from the reception location or chef responsible for catering a wedding, hire a specialty-cake designer, or ask for help from a talented amateur baker. Often, special wedding packages will include the cake as well. When you choose your cake, become familiar with the designer’s style by looking at photographs and taking taste tests.

Generally, bakers calculate a price of a cake by the slice, then multiplying that figure by the number of guests who are anticipated to attend the wedding reception. Prices per slice range from just a few dollars to as much as fifteen dollars, so a cake that feeds one hundred people could cost as little as a few hundred dollars, or it could cost more than a thousand. Be sure to obtain a signed contract from each cake vendor that clearly explains its policy. Cake makers will usually demand a deposit that ranges between 20 and 50 percent of the cost of the cake. The rest of the payment will be due a week or two before the wedding.
